Dear Parents and Guardians,
The safety and well-being of our students both in and out of school is always our top priority.
With summer break coming up in the next few days, we are writing to encourage families to have ongoing conversations about safe internet use.
Social media and screen time have become an integral part of modern life, offering ways to connect, learn, and share experiences. However, for young children, these platforms can present significant dangers that may impact their physical, emotional, and mental development. Some of the primary risks include: exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, privacy and safety risks, mental health concerns, addiction, and reduced physical activity.
Safety and security are a community responsibility, and we are encouraging you to speak with your child about responsible social media use and the importance of making thoughtful decisions online. Families and guardians can find information about digital citizenship on the DOE webpage: https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/school-environment/digital-citizenship.
Students who engage in inappropriate conduct in the digital space will be addressed in accordance with NYCPS Behavioral Expectations, which may include conversations with the student, parent/guardian involvement, and appropriate consequences aligned with DOE policy. By working together, we can help our students develop the social and emotional skills they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
Recognizing these challenges, JHS 185 continues to be committed to promoting cyber safety and educating our students about making responsible online choices. We have and will continue to implement comprehensive assemblies focused on digital responsibility and safety led by school staff and in collaboration with the NYPD’s 109th Precinct Youth Coordination Officers. These assemblies provide valuable guidance to students to help ensure that our young learners are equipped with the necessary tools to navigate the digital world safely.
We encourage all parents and guardians to work with us in reinforcing these lessons and helping to foster a safer online environment for our students. Setting clear guidelines, monitoring cell phone use, encouraging offline activities, and educating children about safe online behavior are important steps in supporting their well-being. Should you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact the school at 718-445-3232.
We appreciate your continued support and partnership in keeping our students safe.
Sincerely,
Michael Leung
Principal
